FAQ
Choosing Your Product
What's the difference between a wall mural, wallpaper and the Atelier?
A wall mural is one large image printed to the size of your wall, in numbered panels that fit together like a giant picture. Wallpaper has a repeating pattern or texture and comes in rolls: you hang the strips side by side. The Atelier is our collection of hand-embroidered wallcoverings, made to order. All are paste-the-wall, and all are priced by the square foot of your wall.
Wall mural or wallpaper: which should I choose?
Choose a mural for a statement wall with one continuous image: a landscape, a chinoiserie, a botanical scene. Choose wallpaper for a pattern or a texture, on one wall or a whole room. Not sure? Try See it in your room on the product page with a photo of your wall.
What exactly is a wall mural, and how is it installed?
A mural is a single large image printed to the size of your wall and split into numbered vertical panels. You hang them in order, from left to right, so the image continues from one panel to the next. Our murals are paste-the-wall: you apply the paste to the wall, then place each panel. See wall murals, explained.
Which wallpaper is best for renters who can't damage their walls?
Our non-woven murals and wallpapers come off dry, in full strips, without soaking or scraping, which makes them a good choice when you want an easy change later. We still recommend checking your lease first.
Can I use wallpaper in a bathroom or kitchen?
Yes, in well-ventilated rooms, and choose our Washable material (vinyl), which you can clean with mild soapy water. Avoid areas that get wet directly, such as inside a shower, right behind a sink, or behind a stove. In bathrooms, run the fan or open a window after showers.
Which wallpaper works best to make a small room look bigger or brighter?
Light backgrounds, soft colors, and small or airy patterns open up a space. Vertical stripes or tall designs make a ceiling feel higher, and landscape murals with depth (forests, horizons, skies) create a sense of distance. Very dark colors and large, busy patterns tend to make a small room feel cozier and smaller.
Can I wallpaper just one accent wall?
Absolutely, and it's one of the most popular ways to use wallpaper and murals. Pick the wall your eye goes to first: behind a bed, a sofa, a desk, or a dining table. It's also a smaller, more affordable first project.
Can I apply wallpaper on a ceiling or in a nook?
Yes. Nooks, alcoves and ceilings all work well with a mural or a wallpaper. Ceilings are harder to hang alone, so we suggest a second person. We don't recommend our wallpapers for furniture.
Measuring & Ordering
How is the price calculated?
You pay by the square foot of your wall: width × height, doors and windows included. Wall murals start at $3.99/sq ft (Classic Matte), wallpaper at $2.99/sq ft and Atelier pieces at $44.90/sq ft. The extra paper we add (4 in on every side, pattern match) is free. The minimum order is 10 sq ft (54 sq ft for the Atelier). Shipping, duties and taxes are included.
Can I see the design on my own wall before ordering?
Yes. On any product page, click See it in your room and upload a photo of your room: we place the design on your wall in a few seconds. Your photo is only used to create the preview. It is for inspiration only: colors and proportions may vary slightly.
How do I measure my wall?
Measure the width and the height of the whole wall, at the widest and tallest points, doors and windows included. Enter these two numbers on the product page: we calculate everything else, including the extra paper. You never have to count rolls. Not sure? Let us check your measurements, for free.
What are the dimensions of one roll (width, length, coverage)?
Our rolls are 21 in (53 cm) wide by 33 ft (10 m) long and cover about 57 sq ft (5.3 m²). Some designs come in another size: the exact dimensions are always shown on the product page.
What is a pattern repeat, and is the extra paper included?
The pattern repeat is the height after which the design starts again. To keep the pattern aligned, each strip starts at the same point of the design, which uses some extra paper. It is included for free: you only pay for the size of your wall.
How much extra should I order to be safe?
Nothing. Just enter the exact size of your wall: our Perfect Fit Promise adds a free 4-inch (10 cm) margin on every side and the extra paper for pattern matching.
How do I choose the right mural size for my wall?
Measure the exact width and height of your wall and enter them on the product page. We add a free 4-inch (10 cm) margin on every side for trimming, and we adapt the composition to your dimensions so the design always looks balanced. Murals can be printed up to 10 m (32 ft) wide.
Are murals delivered in panels, and how do they fit together?
Yes. Murals are delivered as numbered vertical panels. Hang them in numerical order, side by side, aligning the edges so the image continues across each seam. The panel width depends on the material and the size of your wall.
What if my wall has an unusual shape (slopes, windows, doors)?
Measure the full rectangle of the wall as if the openings weren't there, and order for that size. You'll trim around windows, doors, and sloped ceilings during installation with a sharp utility knife. For murals, keep in mind that part of the image will be hidden behind or cut around these openings.
If I reorder later, will the color match (batch/dye lot)?
We send all the rolls of one order from the same production batch whenever possible. Colors can vary slightly between batches, so we recommend ordering everything for a room at once.
Can I order a sample before buying?
We don't offer samples. Each product page shows the full design and room photos, and See it in your room lets you preview the design on a photo of your own wall. Our materials guide explains each finish, and we are happy to answer any question about a color or a material.
Do you offer custom murals from my own image or dimensions?
All our murals are printed to the exact dimensions of your wall. Murals from your own image are not available at the moment.
Installation
Can I install the wallpaper myself without a professional?
Yes. Our murals and wallpapers are paste-the-wall and designed for DIY installation. Patience matters more than experience. A second person is helpful for tall walls, ceilings, and large mural panels.
What tools and supplies do I need for installation?
A tape measure, a pencil, a level or laser level, a sharp utility knife with spare blades, a smoothing tool or plastic squeegee, a clean cloth and a step ladder. Add a ready-mixed wallpaper paste, a paint roller and a tray. See our hanging guide.
How should I prepare my wall before installing?
Make sure the wall is smooth, clean, dry, and in good condition. Fill holes and cracks, sand them flat, and remove dust. Wash off grease or dirt, and let the wall dry completely. On new drywall or very porous walls, apply a primer first. On fresh paint, wait until it is fully cured (usually 2 to 4 weeks).
How long does it take to wallpaper a room?
An average accent wall takes about half a day, preparation included. A full room can take a day or more depending on its size, corners, and openings. Allow extra time for your first project.
How do I avoid air bubbles and wrinkles?
Work from the top down and from the center outward, smoothing as you go with a squeegee. If a bubble appears, lift the section and smooth it again, or prick it with a pin and press the air out.
How do I work around outlets, switches, and corners?
Turn off the power first and remove the cover plates. Hang the strip over the box, cut an X over the opening, then trim the excess along the edges and put the cover back. In corners, smooth the paper into the corner, cut it, and start the next strip from the corner on the new wall, overlapping slightly so no gap shows.
Where do I start, and which direction should I hang the strips?
Start in a corner or at the edge of the wall, and draw a straight vertical line with a level, about one strip width away. Walls and corners are rarely perfectly straight, so this line keeps your first strip aligned. Hang every strip vertically from top to bottom, leaving a little extra at the ceiling and floor to trim. For murals, start with panel 1 on the left.
Do I need paste, and which type works for non-woven wallpaper?
Yes. Our murals and wallpapers are paste-the-wall: you apply the paste directly to the wall, not to the paper, then hang the dry strip. Use a ready-mixed paste labeled for non-woven wallpaper (or for vinyl, if you chose Washable).
Quality & Materials
What materials are your wallpapers made of?
Our wall murals are available in three materials: Classic Matte (non-woven, 160 g/m²), Linen Texture (350 g/m²) and Washable (vinyl, 400 g/m²). Most of our wallpaper rolls are non-woven, and our Atelier pieces are hand-embroidered on a heavy woven base. The material is always shown on the product page. See our materials guide.
Are the colors true to what I see on screen?
We photograph our designs to show them as accurately as possible, but every screen displays color slightly differently, and your room's lighting changes how colors look. If you hesitate between two shades, write to us and we will describe them for you.
Is the wallpaper washable and scratch-resistant?
Only our Washable material (vinyl) can be cleaned: wipe marks off with a damp cloth and mild soapy water. Our other wallpapers are not washable: dust them with a soft, dry cloth. For bathrooms, kitchens, hallways and kids' rooms, choose Washable. Sharp objects, heavy scrubbing and pets' claws can damage any wallpaper.
Will the colors fade in direct sunlight?
Our wallpapers hold their color well in normal indoor conditions. Like any printed material, long exposure to strong direct sunlight can gradually fade colors over the years, so avoid walls that get intense sun all day.
Is the wallpaper thick enough to hide wall imperfections?
It hides small marks and slight color differences. Our heavier materials (Linen Texture, Washable) hide more, but holes, cracks and bumps will still show. Filling and sanding the wall before hanging gives the best result.
Are the murals sharp at large sizes (resolution)?
Yes. Our murals are printed from high-resolution files prepared for large formats, so they look sharp at normal viewing distance.
Where are your products made?
Our designs are selected by The Wallry team and produced by specialist manufacturing partners in China. Every order is checked before it ships to you.
Kids' Rooms & Safety
Are your wallpapers safe for a child's or baby's room?
Our wallpapers are designed for indoor living spaces, including kids' rooms. As with any new decor, we recommend airing the room for a few days after hanging before a baby sleeps in it.
Do your products have safety certifications (low VOC, phthalate-free, lead-free)?
If you need documentation for a specific product, for example for a professional project, contact us at contact@thewallry.com and we will send you the information available for that material.
Does the wallpaper have an odor after installation?
Some materials, especially vinyl, can have a light smell when first unrolled. It fades within a few days. Keep the room well ventilated during and after hanging.
Can I wipe off marker, crayon, or fingerprints?
On our Washable material, fingerprints and light marks usually come off with a soft damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. Our other wallpapers are not washable, so choose Washable for rooms that see sticky hands. Permanent markers and heavy crayon may not come off completely. Test on a hidden area first and never use abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals.
Can my child easily peel the wallpaper off?
Once installed and pressed firmly, the edges are hard to lift. However, a determined child can peel back a corner, especially at the bottom of the wall or near outlets. Pressing the edges well and trimming cleanly at the baseboard reduces the risk.
How do I choose a design that still works as my child grows?
Choose timeless themes such as nature, forests, animals, mountains, skies, or soft geometric patterns rather than specific characters. Neutral or muted colors are easy to pair with new furniture as tastes change. Our non-woven murals peel off dry, so they are easy to replace later.
Care & Removal
How do I clean my wallpaper?
Dust all our wallpapers gently with a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster. Only our Washable material can be cleaned: wipe marks with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water and a drop of mild soap, then pat dry. Never soak, scrub, or use bleach, solvents or abrasive products.
How do I remove wallpaper without damaging the wall?
Our non-woven murals and wallpapers can be peeled off dry in full strips in most cases, then any paste residue is wiped off with warm water.
How do I fix a peeling or damaged area?
For a lifting edge, clean behind it, then press it back firmly. If it won't hold, add a little wallpaper seam adhesive or double-sided tape. For a damaged area, cut a patch from a spare piece, matching the pattern exactly, and apply it over the damaged spot.

Returns & Warranty
What is your return policy?
Wall murals and Atelier pieces are made to your measurements, so they cannot be returned unless they are damaged or faulty. Wallpaper rolls are final sale, except where the law gives you a right of withdrawal (for example in the EU and the UK, 14 days for unopened rolls). See our returns & refunds page.
Can I return opened or installed rolls?
No. Rolls that have been opened, cut or hung can't be returned unless they are faulty. Please check every roll before hanging.
I received the wrong or a defective item. What do I do?
Don't hang it. Contact us within 3 days of delivery at contact@thewallry.com with your order number and photos. We will reprint or replace it free of charge under our Reprint Guarantee.
What if my wallpaper is too short?
It shouldn't happen: we add 4 in (10 cm) on every side of a mural, and the pattern match and trim margin on rolls. If it does and your measurements were right, we reprint the missing panels for free. Check every panel as soon as your order arrives, before hanging, and write to us within 3 days of delivery with your order number, photos of the panels and photos of your wall with a tape measure showing its width and height. If you measured wrong, write to us anyway: we'll reprint the missing panels at a reduced price. See our Reprint Guarantee.

Once your request is approved, we refund your original payment method within 7 days. Your bank may take a few extra days to show the credit.
